As you shop for groceries and gifts this season, you are most likely hearing the “Merry Christmas, Happy Holidays” greeting from the Salvation Army bell ringers and store clerks. “Happy Advent” is a good way to reply, and is a self-reminder that this is the season to prepare our hearts for Christ’s coming, and to bless others as a witness to his love.
Advent, from the Latin word, venire (to come), is not about consuming things, rather it’s about emptying ourselves as we await the coming of our Savior and Redeemer and learn from Him how to make a gift of ourselves to others.
Five ways you can bless others this season:
1) Be more at peace, more fulfilled and more content. Spend time with Jesus. Ask Him to help you enter into the season. Pray. Read Scripture. Reflect on all the blessings He has placed in your life, and be drawn closer to Him so that you can share Him with others.
2) “Like” our New Life Center Facebook page, share the link and stay connected with others, as we journey together this season with our spouses, family and friends. Then, let them know about events and activities that will enrich their lives.
4) If needed, ask God to heal your family. Attend a Family Healing Mass tonight at 6:30 p.m. at St. Mary’s Church, 157 High Street in Williamston. Celebrants are Fr. Mark Rutherford and Fr. John Esper. There will be an extended Penitential Rite where Fr. John will acknowledge sins, illnesses and addictions that affect families today, and he will ask God to heal them.
5) Make a financial gift or donate gently used toys, baby and maternity clothes, diapers, mattresses and box springs, and infant furniture to a pregnancy resource center or women’s shelter. Check out Lansing-based Shared Pregnancy , Pregnancy Services and Hannah’s House on the web. They have many needs and serve hundreds of women weekly.
